Christmas Movie #15: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

A confession on this one. Never seen it before this point.

Last year, several people said that it was strange that I never saw it as a child. So, inevitably, I thought it necessary to include it in this albatross around my neck. I mean film challenge.

Maybe there is something about seeing Christmas films at a young age that means they remain enjoyable into adulthood. Not that I didn't enjoy Christmas Vacation, but after a first watch I can't imagine it becoming a must watch at this time of year.

What is evident from it is why Chevy Chase was such a huge star in the 80s. He's both extremely likeable and has those Steve Martin-esque tense bug eyed expressions. The scene where he realises he won't be recieving a bonus is brilliantly funny and slightly heartbreaking. And it must be shared.

It's definately funny and has heart, but when the slapstick arrives, it feels to me like warm up ideas for the first Home Alone (that John Hughes then got out a year later). I'll definately revisit Christmas Vacation one day. But perhaps when I haven't been watching all the Christmas movies that I have genuine affection for.
